Is It Spring Yet?

It was such a gorgeous day yesterday!
74 degrees, the sun peeking out now and then from the overcast sky...
perfection!

Poor Mother Nature is confused or eager to get started on a brand new year of life.  Buds are popping up all over town...

I've been dreaming about these days hanging out in the sunshine, swaying in the hammock, watching the sky. My heart was full as I soaked up the sun, felt the gentle breeze, rocked slowly and listened to the laughter of my children as they ran around the yard with their friends.  I hope this beautiful warmer weather is here to stay so the spring and summer months take up most of the year!

Mad face...

Playing with different lighting again...

I found Joshua playing by the wonderful window light and I took a few shots of him per my usual style.  Then I decided to try something different and use split lighting.  He wasn't interested in my idea so I told him he could make a mad face (knowing it would fit with this style of lighting! haha) and this is what I ended up with.  Even though he's not happy, I still kind of like this of him...

Tricks...

Just for fun, I've been experimenting with different lighting lately.  While these are not turning out to be anything extraordinary (or even well done or interesting!), it has been fun to try new things and be inspired to use these techniques in other applications.

Please ignore the tree coming out of his head and other distracting things in the background. My goal was to preserve some blue sky and a little sun glow while lighting his face with off camera flash (OCF)...

This was just more OCF, I put it in the room behind him...

I set some small flashlights in his lap to light up the book and bounce up to light his face...

Goofing off with double exposures.  I set the shutter to a really slow shutter speed (2 seconds?) and we were in a pitch black room.  I handheld a flash to fire immediately and then again after he ran toward the camera.  It was all fun and games until someone got hurt... he ran into the camera! lol

These images are SO different from my personal likings  and some are just down right creepy!  But, again, it helps me to think more creatively about using different lighting to achieve new looks to my images!

Starry Night...

I've been hopping around looking for inspiration everywhere since I'm trying to take at least one pic a day.  I used to do this and it was always so much fun!  Taking pics every day is once again a lot of fun!  For this particular challenge, I was supposed to get inspiration from a piece of art.  I chose Van Gogh's Starry Night, who doesn't love that?  While it doesn't look exactly like his in most ways, it did inspire me to attempt a shot of the stars.  I wanted some trees in the image and had to avoid some power lines (even out in the middle of nowhere Pfft!).  I would love to try this again when I have more than 10 minutes to plan and shoot but for now, I'm pleased with this hasty attempt...

I played a little in photoshop since I didn't think to take some time to shoot star trails while I was out there freezing in the middle of nowhere!

Then I really played to attempt to make it more like Van Gogh's.  That didn't work out but this was kind of fun...

Look for inspiration everywhere!

Macro Monday...

I just can't resist bundling up and grabbing my camera when I see snow!  This is my latest capture and my most favorite so far.  I'm always in awe of such a delicate and tiny creation, so perfectly formed!  And I'm always amazed that God allows me to capture His beauty...

A Walk Around the Block...

A few of my captures from our little outing...

Macro Monday

Joshua found a bouncy ball and we decided to take pics of it.  Here he is taking a pic...

Here is his shot...

I like the distortion from the wide angle.  He's quite the artist!

And here is my version shot with my 100mm macro...

Snow...

When you grow up in sunny Southern California, you still get that magical feeling when you see snow falling from the sky.  It's dreamy and surreal... at least to those of us who grew up in the desert!
Of course I had to venture out and try my hand at capturing a snowflake.  It has been years since I last tried!  Still very tricky and I didn't come up with anything awe-inspiring but it's still amazing to me to see just how delicate and intricate these itty bitty flakes can be.  Joshua loved seeing them when I uploaded the images onto my computer.  He said, "Mom! It's a real snowflake, I can see it!"  I suppose the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree of wonder!

Cincinnati Skyline...

I was fortunate to attend a Photography Convention last weekend in Covington, KY.  Not only did I get the opportunity to be inspired by some fabulous speakers, I was also blessed to hang out with some amazing photographers, especially those from my area of the world!

Just for fun, one night we froze on the balcony to capture the Cincinnati skyline just across the Ohio River...

And one of the bridge...

Just Playing...

The boys enjoyed playing around with some camera tricks.  Guess who's first thought was to include Super Mario Bros.?

This House Thursday...

Jeremiah started taking piano lessons this past fall.  He is doing very well and he's really enjoying it!
We are so grateful to find this piano for him...

{Mommy Moment}
Joshua is pretty excited about a piano in the house as well.  He asked if he could have a lesson and he was pretty good!  Jeremiah grew tired of his little brother playing the same 2 pages over and over so he took it upon himself to teach him a little more.  Sweet big brother!

After Coffee...

Sometimes this feels like the truest story ever told...

Morning Uno...

We've been playing this game a lot around here lately...

Dear Pinterest, I love you for this idea...

Tiny and Pink...

Today I was told to choose something Tiny and Pink.  I'm pretty sure he had this in mind...
